Boojum was built on Bristol Channel Pilot cutter hull, but crafted to be a gentlemen’s yacht.
This 62′ Classic cutter Boojum (47′ without bowsprit) is an amazing piece of sailing history and has been consistently updated. She recently underwent an extensive refit to the highest standards. Boojum is just out of refit and ready to go sailing.
Built in 1909 by W. E. Thomas in Falmouth, UK, the 62′ classic cutter Boojum is rigged with a topmast and has a carvel hull of pitch pine on oak frames and was originally fitted with a BMC 44kw diesel engine. Her current engine is a 2013, 75hp beta with just 36 hours on her since refurbishment in 2022.
On the original wax papers (included in the sale) S/Y Boojum was commissioned by Mr. Buckley Haed, Permanent Address Garlick Club London, Occupation ‘Gentlemen’. The Garlick Club London was founded as a private Gentleman club in 1831 in the heart of London’s West End Theatreland. It has the most extensive theatrical and artistic drawings in existence in the world. The name Boojum comes from Lewis Carrol’s (of Alice in Wonderland fame) story ‘Hunting of the Snark’
Built in 1909, she was designed off the lines of a Bristol Channel pilot cutter but was made sleeker and narrower with lines of yacht which was her intended purpose as a Gentleman’s Yacht. Boojum is on the UK Historic Ship Register list and following her refit was the runner up in the 2021 National Historic Ship photograph competition. In June 2021 she was award best newcomer by the Old Gaffers Association at the Yarmouth Regatta. She also sailed in the iconic ‘Round the Island Race’ and ‘Cowes Classics Week’. During Cowes Classic Week Boojum was running full sail on a downwind start alongside the famous Suhaili and Sir Robert Knox-Johnston hailed the current owner and commented ‘Beautiful Boat’.
A quirky later addition was a larger bar/galley with a brass foot stand which was reclaimed while cruising the West Coast of from the whisky island Oban. This has created nice warm place to enjoy a glass of wine or a ‘wee dram’ under the glass snowdrop lights in the lovely wooden interior. The current owner has also sympathetically added a marble backed Dickinson Diesel heater further adding to the charm and ambiance of the interior.
A classic yacht surveyor was appointed by the current owner from purchase and has been involved throughout the refit. A recent survey will be available shortly. Boojum is currently lying in Villamoura, Algarve under professional guardinarge.
